Sustainability Entrepreneurship Africa

The concept of sustainable development was popularized by the World Commission on Environment and Development in its report "Our Common Future" that was published in 1987. The Commission defined sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This definition is the one most often cited.

The symbiotic nature of our existence demands a balanced approach to the way we produce and consume, resulting in long term survival-thinking as a necessity, in our economic endeavours. But it is in seeking to maximise this balance on an economic level, that entrepreneurs, corporates and governments around the world are finding challenges. Perceptions are that green economy thinking only translates to added costs and an increase in resource utilisation and management applications.

The symbiotic nature of our existence demands a balanced approach to the way we produce and consume, resulting in long term survival-thinking as a necessity, in our economic endeavors. But it is in seeking to maximise this balance on an economic level, that entrepreneurs, corporates and governments around the world are finding challenges. Perceptions are that green economy thinking only translates to added costs and a decrease in resource utilisation and management applications. Although not unfounded, the dramatic dwindling of natural resources implies inevitable increases in resource costs, adding to the burden of commerce regardless. We are thus compelled to ensure that business and society becomes ever vigilant in our consumption and production habits, adapting more responsible behavior patterns. Our responsibility is therefore to be both vigilant and thoughtful about how we produce and consume products and services on a daily basis. Only through creating awareness, through education and through developing appropriate economic sustainability tools can we invoke distinct behavioral changes that affect reduction in the use of our resources, thus negating the ever increasing costs of our natural resources.

SE Africa intend to position Sustainability Entrepreneurship as a field of opportunity to advance green-economy creativity, drive innovation, facilitate entrepreneurship and develop economic growth of business in Southern Africa. This is an area in business where value can be created, by embracing the untapped potential sustainability can offer your business.
